Is Krill the new king of essential fatty acids?
If you’re not taking an Omega-3 fatty acid supplement you might want to change that. A family of essentially healthy fats that are essential to your well-being, omega-3s can’t be produced by our bodies so it’s essential that we get them from our diet. This is tricky because many of us don’t eat enough of the foods that contain them. This is why it’s important that we take a supplement.
Just a few of the benefits of taking omega-3 fatty acids include the fact that it can lower bad cholesterol, fight inflammation and reduce your odds of suffering from a cardiovascular condition like heart disease. Getting enough omega-3 can also protect your brain. Studies have shown that an increased intake of omega-3 is linked to decreased age-related mental decline and a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Get what you need
The most important types of omega-3 fatty acids are alpha linoleic acid (ALA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). ALA is found in plants like chia seeds and walnuts. DHA and EPA are most abundant in fatty fish like mackerel and salmon as well as krill and, to a lesser extent, certain algae.
If you’re a strict vegetarian or vegan, you’ll be limited to consuming ALAs, but it’s important to know that DHA and EPA are far superior. As ALA is precursor to DHA and EHA, your body has to break it down before it can be used and this isn’t something its especially good at. For this reason, it’s a good idea to skip out on an ALA supplement and rather invest in an algae-based one that contains DHA and EPA.
Why krill is king
For a long time, the top pick for an omega-3 supplement containing DHA and EPA was anything fish oil-based. Now, however, there’s a new kid on the block and that’s krill oil. Krill are tiny, shrimplike crustaceans. They’re mostly found in the freezing waters of the Arctic and Antarctic where they feed off microscopic phytoplankton.
New research has found that, your body has an easier time absorbed the DHA and EPA found in krill oil than it does in fish oil. One study pitted participants who’d taken fish oil against those taking krill against each other, measuring the levels of fatty acid in their blood over a series of days. It was found that those who’d consumed the krill oil had a higher concentration of DHA and EPA. Also, another study did the same thing, but gave the krill oil group only two thirds of the dose of fish oil. The result was that both groups would have the same levels of DHA and EPA, proving that you need less krill oil to get the same results are you would fish oil. In short, it looks like krill oil is easier for your body to absorb and more potent than oil derived from fish.
At Health Renewal, we take a holistic approach to medicine, meaning we treat all of you, not just your condition. Thus, we understand that nutraceuticals play a very important role in creating an all-round picture of good health and have created our own brand – Renewal Institute supplements.

You can purchase both of these super supplements and more in our Online Skin Shop as well as in our branches across the country.
The bottom line
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to good health. You can get them from your diet, but it’s best to supplement them. If you’re a vegan or vegetarian, consider an algae-derived supplement containing DHA and EPA as this is more readily absorbed by your body than a plant-derived ALA supplement. If you’re not limited by a dietary choice, you can get your omega-3s from fish or krill oil. New studies have found that krill oil is easier for your body to absorb and more potent.
